10 Safe Skin Care Products during Pregnancy and Breastfeeding

Tiffany Vanderbilt

You’re pregnant! Congrats! Did you just read a bunch of the things you can’t use on your skin and freak out because you are now afraid that one thing you bought at Sephora might turn your baby into a one-eyed cyclops? Yes, same.

Don’t worry, I did all the research so you don’t have to. And I have shared different products based on your concerns.

Lots of the products shown here are made by Beautycounter because each of their products is incredibly impactful, very well tested, and super-duper clean. They have a Never List which is a list of ingredients they NEVER put in their products which are inclusive of all the No-No’s for soon-to-be Mamas or breastfeeding Mamas. Not all are Beautycounter, so read below to get the scoop:

1. Beautycounter One-Step Makeup Remover Wipes

Why I love it? Because morning sickness lasts all day and sometimes doing a whole routine to go to bed is too much. These one-step wipes are super effective and if you want to wipe your face and go to bed, mama, you do you. These powerful yet not irritating wipes does all the heavy lifting: removes makeup and cleanses your skin. Get ready to be efficient!

2. BC Charcoal Cleansing Bar

Why I love it? Because hormones are all over the place during pregnancy and with that comes acne and sometimes oily skin. This bar is ideal for acne-prone skin as it detoxes and absorbs impurities without drying you out. It’s the perfect face wash that is tough acting on acne but squeaky clean for baby + mama.

3. Its All Good 2 in 1 Deep Cleansing Facial Oil

Why I love it? Want to wear your waterproof makeup to those tearful sonograms but hate the makeup removal process that has to come after? This Cleansing Facial Oil dissolves all kinds of tough makeup like magic. Simply massage oil into face and over eyes (doesn’t sting!), rinse with warm water, and voila! No makeup and a thoroughly cleansed face.

4. BC Counter+ Brightening Facial Mist

Why I love it?  As you’ll see, anything that’s a two-for-one is a must for me. I spray this after my morning face wash and before makeup. It acts as the perfect primer as it minimizes pores and balances my skin – dry patches are hydrated and oily t-zones are subdued. I also use it as a makeup setting spray when I’m all done to keep my makeup fresh all day! So forget 2-in-1, this bad boy is a 3-in-1: Primer, Setter, Refresher!

5. Thayes Alcohol-free Unscented Witch Hazel Toner

Why I love it? Witch hazel has always been a go-to of mine. It protects against skin damage, fights inflammation, minimizes acne flare-ups, and reduces skin irritation. Help me with all those things, all the time, thank you and good-bye. I love Thayes alcohol-free, unscented version because it also has aloe vera as a soothing ingredient. And both the Witch Hazel and Aloe Vera in here are certified organic. Meaning – it has all the good stuff, none of the bad stuff.

6. BC Countermatch Intense Moisture Serum

Why I love this? This Intense Moisture Serum is exactly that, intense moisture. It has two forms of Hylaraunic Acid (the holy grail for age prevention) for an immediate boost in skin plumpness. It also has Vitamins C & E to help provide antioxidant protection. It’s a great serum that won’t clog your pores and gives your skin an added radiance.

7. BC Countermatch Adaptive Moisture Lotion

Why I love this? I put this on religiously morning and night after the Intense Moisture Serum. I’m not the dewy 20-year-old I once was. Although I’ll spend all of the money on things to try and make my mid-thirties self appear so. (Full disclosure: I was never a dewy 20-year-old, I was an oily, greasy 20-year-old.) This bad boy provides 24-hr hydration and actually adjusts hydration throughout the day based on your skin’s needs.

8. BC Counter+ Overnight Resurfacing Peel

Why I love this? I was seriously blown away the first time I tried this product. I woke up feeling like I just had one of those fancy facials you spend $100+ on and then you convince yourself you look like a Victoria’s Secret model. Well, I’ll never be Gisele, but my skin felt like it a night after using this peel. It doesn’t sting at all, and it gave the same effect each morning after using it. I only use this product 1-2x per week so it lasts a long time.

9. THENA Mother’s Glow Belly & Body Oil

Why I love this? Because stretch marks are marks of the devil! Totally just kidding, I have a bunch and I’m an angel, but I don’t necessarily want to add any more if I don’t have to. This formula goes on super smooth and doesn’t leave you feeling greasy like most oils. To top it off, I haven’t noticed a new addition to my current collection and I give all the credit to Thena.

10. BC Dew Skin Tinted Moisturizer

Why I love this? Refer to point 7. Dew skin is life! So while I still battle acne AND now am starting a war wrinkles whilst building a brand new baby in my womb, I still got goals for that enviable glow! This tinted moisturizer is amazing. It has SPF 20 and enough coverage to act as your foundation when you’re on the go. It’s easy to build up if you want more coverage, and the SPF is squeaky clean and building-baby friendly.

We all want dewy skin, no wrinkles, no acne while creating a baby that is soon going to throw any chance of yacht-jumping-in-Greece-during-Yacht-Week-and-marrying-Channing-Tatum out the window. But hey, we can all dream. In the meantime, you might as well look as good as you can – even while you feel like vomiting – and keep you and your little one super safe.
